What Is Paintless Dent Repair?
A blog about dent repair, really? That's right, we're on a mission to raise awareness about the simplicity of Paintless Dent Repair.
PDR is the art of repairing dents to the body of a vehicle by meticulously mending the metal back into shape.
The highly skilled technicians behind this trade have ditched all of the out-dated repair methods like grinding, sanding, using fillers, drilling holes and as the name suggests, without painting.
Benefits of Mobile Dent Repair
PDR is known its long lists of benefits like costing pennies compared to a body shop and repairs are completed same day without reporting to CarFax.
Now add the fact that you don't have to leave your home or interrupt your busy schedule and the convenience factor goes through the roof. This makes mobile dent repair the obvious choice for most.
It's no secret that convenience and instant gratification are taking over but what about quality and customer service? When deciding between a PDR shop and a mobile dent removal service you'll typically be sacrificing quality from mobile techs and convenience from the shops.
Dents Dings and Things has combined the highest quality dent repairs with unbeatable customer service, packing it all into an affordable mobile service, requiring nothing more than a call or text from you.
The History of Paintless Dent Repair
Mending a malleable metal into a desired shape dates back to 200 BC with metals such as Gold, Silver and Tin being used for techniques called repoussé and chasing. These are the earliest documented terms in metalworking to which a metal is shaped by hammering from the back side to create the design. Chasing, later named embossing, is a similar technique used in conjunction with repoussé where hammering occurs from the front side to tap the metal down.
In 1931 the term Paintless Dent Repair or PDR was cited in a revolutionary book titled “The Key To Metal Bumping” by Frank T. Sargent. The book goes on to describe special tools used for dent removal, exactly how they are used and even goes into detail about how one might predict the movements of the metal.
Another 30 years would pass before these PDR skills and results were first on public display in the automotive industry. At the 1960 “International Motor Sports Show” in New York City, Oscar Flaig of Mercedes-Benz had the important job of repairing any imperfections to the body of the vehicles being displayed, whether caused in transport or by those visiting each day.
He would have only one night to bring all the finishes back to a perfect showroom condition for the following day. Short on time and out of pure necessity he began to push dents out with a hammer to avoid using fillers before repainting the area. He quickly realized paint was also unnecessary when a dent was removed versus being filled in with another material; thus saving him hours on each repair.
After the show, Flaig would return to his job at Mercedes-Benz in Germany where he would devise training techniques and design tools for removing dents without painting or using fillers. He was quickly promoting to foreman at the plant, receiving the title “golden tinsmith” as he started training others in PDR for every branch of Merceds’ manufacturing plants. These PDR tools and strategies would continue to evolve in Germany long before being accepted and promoted as a successful way to remove dents in the United States.
Until 1979 when Juergen Holzer moved from Germany to Minneapolis and started Dent Kraft - the first recorded business in the US to provide paintless dent removal as a service. Although similar metalworking techniques were deployed in the early 1930’s in automotive assembly lines, it was almost a half-century before paintless dent repair became a thriving industry of its own.
Dents Dings and Things was established in 2001 as one of the original PDR shops in Sacramento. The owner and master technician was on a mission to provide a reliable and affordable solution to repairing dents on your vehicles - To which they have perfected the process today, paired with extraordinary customer service and a flawless reputation.
Body Shop vs. Dent Repair
Paintless dent repair or dent removal, often referred to as PDR, is the repair method of choice for vehicle owners, rental companies, dealerships and even traditional body shops; but why is that? PDR has many advantages some of which include:
-No Car-Fax Reporting
-Maintains Original Parts and Paint
-Most Affordable Method of Repair
-Increased Resale Value
-Timely Repairs; Often Same Day
There are many aspects to consider when determining if auto body damage qualifies for painless dent removal. The first might seem obvious; is the paint in the damaged area disturbed, scratched or chipped? If so, you should still consult with a PDR technician before having anyone work on your vehicle. The technician may be able to save you quite a bit by removing the dent with PDR. Then if you still believe it should be painted, most have a trusted paint shop to refer you to. Even though you may be paying two bills, the overall cost can be significantly lower. This factor is typically left to the discretion of the vehicle owner and their preference.
Identify the Type of Dents or Damages
Something else to look for; does the panel or bumper have any holes, tears, or stretched deformations of metal? Highly skilled PDR technicians can sometimes mend and manipulate stretched or creased metal back into its original form. Cracks, holes, and tears are a different story, usually requiring more traditional forms of auto body reconditioning. These methods could include bonding, sanding, and painting although a brand new part could also be the best option.
We could go on and on but the final consideration we’ll touch on: was the damage caused by another stationary vehicle or object or was it the result of a moving collision? Dents and dings caused by stationary objects are always more likely to qualify for paintless dent repair, but with the right skills and experience your technician can repair dents caused by low impact, parking lot accidents and fender benders as well.
With so many things to think about, we always recommend letting a technician take a look before having any work done to your vehicle. Are you considering paintless dent removal for your auto body dents and dings? Give us a call or send a few photos, Mike will gladly take a look to determine if PDR is right for you. If you would like to send us photos you may do so here and receive 10% off your mobile dent repair.
Trust Your Technician
Chances are you have plenty of options for dent repair technicians to complete the repair and if you’re reading this we can only assume your vehicle is important to you. It’s of utmost importance to research the company and read their Google and Yelp reviews before scheduling any service. Working in the industry, we hear of inexperienced mobile technicians biting off more than they can chew quite often, leaving you with a butchered, more expensive repair.
What could be worst than inexperienced techs? Scammers that haven't repaired a dent in their life! As you can see in the video below; these scammers are known to lurk in parking lots or at stop lights and prey on unsuspecting victims. They often cause the dent themselves (if there isn't one already) and will walk up as you approach your vehicle.
Then comes the pitch; they'll have some story along the lines of 'I watched someone cause this dent and leave so I decided to wait for you. I actually own a dent repair business and wanted to help you out, I could come by today or tomorrow for the repair and you'll never know the dent was there.'
Signs of a Dent Repair Scammer
There is also another variation of these dent repair scams, the original being a poser with no tools or dent repair experience at all and the other will seem like legitimate PDR technicians who will (attempt to) repair the dent that they caused to begin with. These con-artists are creating their own work by purposely denting the vehicle while you're inside shopping only to then offer you a 'discount' for paintless dent removal.
If you are considering mobile dent repair for your ride here are a few red flags to be on the lookout for:
- If the technician approaches you; it is our suggestion to do more research than normal on the company in question.
- If a quick Google search doesn't fill up the first page of results with information about their business, consider another.
- If they ask for payment before completing the repair; never pay until you are satisfied with the results.
- If the quoted price on the day of repair increases significantly; get a second opinion.

Estimators consider aspects like the quantity of damages, and will do a dent repair service expense evaluation and estimate. Sometimes there are lots of dents on a panel and the price of repairing with PDR goes beyond the expense of replacing the panel.
What Is Paintless Damage Fixing? Paintless dent repair work or elimination (PDR) is a corrective procedure made use of to promptly get rid of minor dents from the body of a car.
This primarily suggests that the metal tends to wish to return to its original shape. Generally, this can be acquired with PDR as long as the damage hasn't went beyond one of the limits we have mentioned above.
A lot of automobile's body panels can be repaired with the paintless dent fixing procedure, however there are some that can not.
